The question of "gender" is not nearly so simple as it appears. Typically, the distinction which authors and transgendered people make is that "sex" is biological (and, at least at some levels, subject to surgical or homonal change, or subject to various intersex states), but "gender" is a social construct and hence potentially more malleable. If you would like to learn more about transgenderism, we recommend the books Sex Changes: The Politics of Transgenderism by Patrick Califia and My Gender Workbook by Kate Bornstein.
