Music to Play By from the Out of the Shadows Bookshop!
The music CDs on this page include some of the most popular background music for setting the mood while playing or during aftercare. The selection here highlights many popular rock, folk, jazz, shows, and classical recordings. Some of the music recommended here has a driving beat with ever-building intensity; some is lyrically beautiful; some is peaceful; and some have direct references to BDSM concepts.
Pop, rock, folk, drums, jazz, and more:
City of Angels, Alanis Morissette, U2, Sarah McLachlan, etc. Suggested by cfish.
Savage Garden, Savage Garden Suggested by susi.
Metallica, Metallica aka The Black Album. Suggested by cali.
Aion, Dead Can Dance Suggested by Graystreak.
Mirror Pool, Lisa Gerrard Suggested by Graystreak.
Duality, Lisa Gerrard Suggested by Graystreak.
Maxinquaye, Tricky. Suggested by Graystreak. "Good for sex stuff."
Massive Attack Mezzanine Suggested by camilla. "Dark music with pounding rhythms."
Come to Daddy Aphex Twin Suggested by camilla.
"For people who are really really messed up in the head, try throwing some
Aphex Twin in the stereo while your best friend is tied up. I think it
takes a fairly unique sexuality to understand the Aphex Twin, but it's well
worth the effort. His most recent album is a masterpiece of
Temptation, Holly Cole Suggested by camilla.
"Possibly the greatest sleaze album of all time. Holly Cole who has a
beautiful sexy voice sings the erotic songs of Tom Waits. A Must. There's
something about the way Holly Cole demands "Take me home, you silly boy" as
the opening line that makes anyone who hears it melt. Tom Wait's dark
sexuality fits naturally in with S&M of course."
...various Duke Ellington Suggested by camilla.
"KazRecords have released ten volumes so far,
but I think the second is the best simply for the fantastically slimy
`Something Sexual.'" Comment from nflauren: My SO loves Duke Ellington, too, for BDSM/sex; but it routinely gets voted thumbs down for playparty music whenever he puts it on. *laugh* No accounting for taste variation: just go for what you like, of course!
Spiders Space Suggested by camilla. "There's song I'm rather fond called "Female of the Species." A song all dominant women will instantly take to (the
female of the species is deadlier than the male)."
Titanic Days Kirsty MacColl Suggested by camilla.
"I can't stop killing you' is a natural
S&M anthem. The opening lines of "Titanic Days" (title track) are as
I just know,
though I can't see
and I can feel his hands all over me
his hot breath on me/
i can't resist
i never knew there might be days like this"
The Visit, Loreena McKennitt Suggested by everyone. One of my favorites, too; though it's so popular that it's probably hackneyed to put on at a playparty.
Hello Betty, Betty. If you can find them, two other albums, Kiss My Sticky and Betty are also good.
Best of Kodo, Kodo. Suggested by Graystreak. Unique, intense, traditional Japanese drumming. Also
Heartbeat Drummers of Japan, Kodo.
Planet Drum, Mickey Hart. Suggested by Graystreak.
Concussion Ensemble, Suggested by Graystreak. More hot drumming, but hard to find.
